Acrostic Indicator Words

Acrostic indicators tell you to take the first (or last) letters of words.

Also called letter-selection: you read the initial or final letters of consecutive words to spell part of the answer. Indicators point to beginnings, ends, or leaders.

Worked example

Heads of police arrest nervous intruder, causing alarm (5)

Answer: PANIC

Definition: "alarm". "Heads of" tells you to take the leading letter of each following word. The words "police arrest nervous intruder causing" give P, A, N, I, C. Reading those initials in order spells PANIC.
